Broadway Night with Local Talent

The Utah Valley Symphony will begin by performing Bernstein's Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, an orchestral feat which has not been done in Utah Valley for sometime. This will whet the appetite for more song and dance from our talented local vocalists. (see pictures below)

Broadway favorites with local talent will satisfy those that are longing for the “good old days”. This is the perfect performance to bring your family to hear favorites from Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and West Side Story.

Soprano Mindy Smoot Robbins performing the roles of Mary Poppins, Maria von Trapp and Eliza Doolittle. Mindy was working professionally by age 16 and started teaching voice at 19. She toured with the Broadway company of Les Miserables, covering the role of Eponine played by Sutton Foster and most recently played Maria in The Sound of Music at Tuacahn. Other credits include performing with Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disney, BYU's Young Ambassadors, Lagoon, Mandy Moore, Colm Wilkinson, Jason Alexander, Sam Harris, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (in Lex de Azevedo's Gloria: The Life of Christ). A BYU graduate with a BFA in music dance theatre, she also taught voice for the university's School of Music. Now owner and artistic director of On Broadway Academy in American Fork, Mindy shares her talents with her students. She is a member of Actor's Equity Association and the National Association of Teachers of Singing.

Saratoga Springs resident entertainer and tenor Zack Wilson will be performing in the role of Burt from Mary Poppins and Tony from West Side Story, having previously performed the role of Tony on stage. When he was 15, Zack traveled to Japan multiple times to perform with Onstage Performing Arts Studio. In 2007 he returned to the Orient again, traveling to China as a member of the BYU Young Ambassadors. He received formal dance training with Center Stage Performing Arts Studio and has been featured in a number of their shows. He has also won national titles with the studio's ballroom and contemporary jazz companies. Two of his stage roles have been Tony in West Side Story and Chad in All Shook Up. You may have seen Zack performing at Lagoon in their shows Rock U2 the Top, The Witching Hour, and Zombie Mambo.

Rachel Woodward, soprano, will be acting as Maria from West Side Story, where she previously performed this and many other leading roles at the Hale Center Theatre of Orem. Currently starring in The Secret Garden as Lily opposite Dallyn Vail Bayles at Hale Center Theater Orem (HCTO), Rachel studied music dance theatre at BYU. Some of her favorite roles include Marguerite in The Scarlet Pimpernel (HCTO), Maria in West Side Story (HCTO), Belle in Beauty and the Beast (HCTO), Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Sundance), Cecily Cardew in The Importance of Being Earnest (HCT, West Valley), and Snookie in 110 in the Shade, starring Broadway's Audra McDonald and Will Swenson (HCTO). For her portrayal of Anne Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank, she won the Deseret News Best Actress award. Rachel can be seen as Susie in the Disney Channel Original Movie Hatching Pete.

Alto Jennifer Stott Madsen of Highland will fill out the supporting roles by singing 'Climb Every Mountain' and 'Feed the Birds.' Jennifer has sung with the Sacramento Junior Opera Guild, the Sacramento Music Circus, Galena Street East, and the Spokane Jazz Orchestra. A former BYU Young Ambassador, she went on to study with famed vocal coach William Stoker. Her talents landed her in Los Angeles, where she developed a thriving vocal studio while continuing to perform, sing, choreograph, and direct. She also worked as an on-call talent coach for Star Search and Natalie Cole's Big Break. She served six years as artistic director for the American Children's Theatre of Southern California and was musical director and choreographer for The Sound of Music at Sundance. Jennifer currently teaches at UVU and for the On Broadway Academy. She can be heard on Kenneth Cope's albums My Servant, Joseph, and Women at the Well. She has three solo albums as well: Jennifer Madsen Presents, Consider Me, and I Still Believe in Love — and you can hear her as the voice of CBS's Cold Case.
