Former Provo Tabernacle Groups Combine for Christmas Concerts

Provo's Covey Center for the Arts will host two organizations, formerly housed in the now destroyed Provo Tabernacle, for two nights of family Christmas entertainment. The Utah Valley Symphony and the Wasatch Chorale will combine for concerts on November 30th and December 1st.

The groups' directors, Dr. Bryce Rytting and Dr. Reed Criddle, will pair vocal and instrumental expressions in several combined numbers including "Fantasia on Christmas Carols," a potpourri of well-known Christmas themes written in 1912 by English composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams. The piece features baritone John Buffet, a Resident Artist with the Utah Opera. Other combined pieces include John Rutter's "Shepherd's Pipe Carol" and Engelbert Humperdinck's German version of "Evening Prayer" from the opera, Hansel und Gretel, among others.

Both musical organizations are traditional holiday favorites in the Provo area and beyond. Wasatch Chorale was established in 1974, and the Utah Valley Symphony in 1959. Both have received wide acclaim for performance quality and have entertained many audiences over the years.

The symphony and the choir have decades-long histories of performances in the Provo Tabernacle, and both moved their home concert series to the Covey Center in 2007. Now, in the first full Christmas season following the tragic December 17, 2010 fire, choir and symphony members have fond memories of those Tabernacle performances. Symphony member, LaReita Berky reminisced, "Most of all we remember that the Provo Tabernacle was not just a building, but a home to all who entered as their hearts were touched in some way."

Performances on November 30th and December 1st, are at 7:30 PM, and tickets can be purchased at the Covey Center box office at 425 West Center Street in Provo. Family passes are available (6 people for $25). Ticket office hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. Call 801-852-7007 for more details.
